Forming Great Souls Through the Great Books
Veritas Tutoring brings Great Books discussions, classical literature training, and college-level essay coaching to Tucson and Oro Valley!

We are Dr. John and Dr. Helen Freeh, a Catholic husband-and-wife team with doctorates in English Literature from Oxford and Baylor Universities and extensive experience in the liberal arts world of education. As parents classically homeschooling our three children, we understand the joys and challenges of forming great souls through great books.
Over the years, we’ve taught thousands of students from high school to postgraduate levels … and graded their thousands of essays! Our experience extends beyond academia: John in journalism, Helen in legal corporate correspondence.
Now, we’re bringing rigorous, college-level classical literary training, Great Books discussions, Socratic seminars, and expert essay coaching directly to families in Tucson and Oro Valley.
Whether you’re seeking to deepen your child’s engagement with Homer, Dante, and Shakespeare, or to master college-ready writing, we’re here to help.
Our tutoring services are eligible for Arizona ESA funding!
Our Ethos
We do not simply believe in the importance of a Catholic Christian classical education, we live it.
John gave up his tenured position as an English professor at Hillsdale College in order to assist Wyoming Catholic College in its foundational years. When we were blessed with children, we wanted to gift them with formation in the Faith and in the liberal arts.
Just as John gave up his tenure to help a foundling Catholic college, Helen stepped away from her career as a college English professor to take on the full-time schooling of our children.

Personal Excellence First
We do not believe the purpose of education is to get your child into the “best” college. True education is to help your child become an excellent human being and to get your child to eternal life.
But, we have also seen that classical education training DOES help students succeed as college students and excel in the professional world.
The liberal arts method does not teach simple facts and knowledge. It teaches students to wonder about the deep truths of existence and our place within a long line of humans (saints and sinners alike) and our shared history. It teaches pride in, yet humility before the proper things.
A Joyful Christian Learning Environment
We believe every soul is made by God to search for Him and to find him in the true, good, and the beautiful. Every person yearns for truth, goodness, and beauty. That’s why we teach the Great Books the Catholic way:
- Faith woven naturally into every discussion
- Socratic questions that spark wonder, not rote responses
- Essays that form the mind and the heart
- Tradition that bridges the present and the past
- Community that unites the student with the host of witnesses that have come before us
We’re here for families who share our vision: forming wise, morally grounded young people who love God and want to think more deeply, and write more clearly.
